Koh Samui Food & Night Market Walk

Eat through Koh Samui — the island's food scene ranges from the upscale resort restaurants with Gulf of Thailand seafood to the authentic southern Thai night markets where coconut curries, fresh seafood, and the distinctive southern Thai palate of heat, sourness, and the deep umami of shrimp paste define the local food culture.

  1. 1

    Fisherman's Village Walking Street

Fisherman's Village in Bo Phut on Koh Samui's northern coast is the island's most atmospheric evening gathering place — the Friday night Walking Street market along the village's main road transforms the colonial-era shophouses of the original fishing village into a market of food stalls, craft vendors, and the restaurants and bars that have colonised the heritage buildings. The combination of the colonial Thai-Chinese shop-house architecture, the string lights over the food vendors, and the sea visible at the end of the village's main street creates the most charming evening atmosphere on the island.

  2. 2

    Nathon Market Authentic Food

Nathon, the administrative capital of Koh Samui on the island's west coast, has the most authentic Thai food market accessible from the resort areas — the morning market serving the residential community of the capital (government workers, teachers, and the Thai service economy workers who live in the non-resort west coast) sells the southern Thai food specialties (the khao man gai poached chicken, the gaeng tai pla fish organ curry, the dried seafood products) at prices that are significantly lower than the resort-area restaurants. Nathon is the counterpart to the international tourist economy of the east coast beaches and provides the most direct encounter with the Thai resident community's daily food culture.

  3. 3

    Southern Thai Seafood

Southern Thai seafood cooking at the Chaweng and Lamai beachfront restaurants provides the most direct expression of the regional cuisine — the southern Thai approach to seafood combines the fresh Gulf of Thailand catch (the prawns, the local crab, the whole snapper, and the squid) with the southern Thai flavour profile of coconut milk, turmeric, the intensely sour and hot qualities of the southern curry (gaeng tai) tradition, and the nam prik kapi (shrimp paste chilli sauce) that is the essential condiment of every southern Thai meal. The beachfront seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch directly from the glass display tanks provide the best expression of the Koh Samui seafood culture accessible to resort visitors.

  4. 4

    Coconut Products Market

Koh Samui's coconut heritage (the island was known as the 'Coconut Island' before tourism transformed its economy, exporting millions of coconuts monthly to Bangkok) is visible in the roadside coconut stalls, the coconut-based products available throughout the island, and the monkey-assisted coconut harvesting demonstrations at the coconut farms that present this aspect of the island's agricultural history to tourists. The fresh coconut water, the coconut ice cream, the coconut sugar (palm sugar), and the coconut milk squeezed to order at the market stalls provide the most direct connection to the crop that supported the island's community for generations before the resort economy arrived.

  5. 5

    Chaweng Night Food Stalls

The night food stall area behind the main Chaweng commercial strip provides the most affordable and most authentic Thai food accessible from the island's most visited resort area — the mobile stalls selling pad thai, grilled chicken with sticky rice, the papaya salad (som tum) in its different regional variations, and the various noodle soups move into position from 6pm and serve until the early hours to cater to both the Thai service workers finishing their evening shifts and the resort visitors who venture off the main beach road in search of cheaper food. The stall food at these informal night markets is often equal in quality to the restaurant meals at a fraction of the price.

  6. 6

    Big C Supermarket Fresh Produce

The Big C and Tesco Lotus supermarkets on the central Koh Samui highway provide the most comprehensive overview of the Thai fresh produce and packaged food available on the island — the fresh fruit section (with the seasonal Thai tropical fruits), the fresh curry paste counter (where each regional curry paste is freshly ground by the market's own chefs), and the prepared food section (selling the Thai take-away food that is the standard lunch for the island's working Thai community) provide the most comprehensive single-location encounter with contemporary Thai food culture available on Koh Samui.
