Masmak Fortress – The Birth of Modern Saudi Arabia
Masmak Fortress—a mud-brick citadel in central Riyadh, built in the 1860s—is the site of the most consequential moment in Saudi history: the January 1902 raid by 21-year-old Abdulaziz ibn Saud (Ibn Saud) who captured the fortress from the rival Al Rashid clan, beginning the reconquest of Arabia and ultimately the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The iron-tipped spear Ibn Saud drove into the fortress gate is still embedded there. The restored fortress now houses a museum documenting Ibn Saud's life and the kingdom's founding.

Al-Dira Square & the Old City Centre
Al-Dira (Deera) Square—Riyadh's historic central square adjacent to the Masmak Fortress—is the traditional heart of the city: the old courthouse, the Great Mosque, and the gold souk cluster around the square. The Thursday and Friday markets in Al-Dira sell traditional Saudi products—Najdi daggers, camel milk products, incense, and traditional clothing. The square was historically the location of public executions (carried out after Friday prayers)—the city's tradition has earned it the dark nickname 'Chop-Chop Square'.

Kingdom Centre Tower – Riyadh's Skyline Icon
The Kingdom Centre Tower (302 m, completed 2002)—with its distinctive parabolic arch and sky bridge connecting the upper sections—is Riyadh's most recognisable skyscraper and won the 2002 Emporis Skyscraper Award as the world's best new tall building. The Sky Bridge observation deck at 300 metres (open evenings) gives the best panoramic view of Riyadh—a vast flat city extending in every direction, bisected by the King Fahd Road axis. The tower's base contains the Kingdom Centre mall, one of Riyadh's largest shopping centres.

National Museum of Saudi Arabia
The National Museum of Saudi Arabia—an 8-gallery museum spanning the full breadth of Arabian history from geology to the modern kingdom—is the most comprehensive introduction to Saudi history and culture in the country. The museum covers the geology of the Arabian Peninsula (fossils, mineral resources), the pre-Islamic period (Nabataean, Thamudic, Lihyanite, and Dadanitic civilisations), the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the four Islamic Caliphates, the Ottoman period, and the founding of Saudi Arabia. The museum is adjacent to the Murabba Palace (the home of Saudi Arabia's founder).

Al Faisaliyah Tower & Riyadh's Modern Architecture
Al Faisaliyah Tower (267 m, 2000)—Riyadh's first skyscraper, designed by Norman Foster—tapers to a golden sphere restaurant at its summit. It is one of Foster's most distinctive commercial towers and marked the beginning of Riyadh's transformation from a horizontal, low-rise desert city to an ambitious modern metropolis. The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), under construction since 2006 and substantially complete, contains 70+ towers on a 1.6 million m² site—the largest financial district development in the world when conceived.

Riyadh's Dining & Entertainment Revolution – Vision 2030
Saudi Vision 2030—Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's economic diversification plan, launched 2016—has transformed Riyadh's entertainment and dining scene faster than any urban change in the city's history. Cinemas (banned until 2018) have opened throughout the city; women drive freely (ban lifted 2018); live concerts by international artists are staged at the JAX entertainment district. Boulevard City (northeast Riyadh) is a new entertainment district with restaurants, performances, and a theme park. Riyadh Season (annual, October–February) is the world's largest entertainment festival by attendance.
