Sirince: The Greek Heritage Wine Village
Sirince, the village 8 kilometers above Selcuk that was the Greek Orthodox community of Kirkince before the 1923 population exchange removed the Greek residents to Greece and was subsequently repopulated with the Muslim Turks from Thessaloniki and Kavala in the same exchange, preserves the 19th century Greek stone houses, the two abandoned churches with the Byzantine frescoes still visible, and the fruit wine tradition that the new population maintained in the same terraced orchards. The Sirince wine stalls selling the strawberry, the peach, the melon, and the grape wines are the most controversial tourist attraction in the village, combining the genuine local tradition with the commercial tourist market.

Balikliova on the Karaburun peninsula north of Izmir, the fishing village accessible by the ferry from the Urla marina or the coastal road through the peninsula interior, is the most completely authentic fishing village in the Izmir province with the working fishing boats, the fish auction on the quay at dawn, the simple fish taverna serving the catch of the day at the tables under the plane trees, and the absence of the boutique hotel conversion that has transformed the more accessible villages of the Cesme peninsula. The Balikliova approach by the small passenger ferry from Iskele is the most atmospheric arrival at any village in the western Aegean.
