Sciacca Day Trip

Visit Sciacca, the coastal town west of Agrigento combining the medieval hilltop historic center, the ceramic craft tradition, the thermal baths using the natural sulfurous springs, and the famous Carnival di Sciacca one of the most traditional in Sicily, the town one of the most complete and undervisited destinations in the Agrigento province.

  1. 1

    Historic Center

Walk the historic center of Sciacca where the medieval lanes, the Norman-Arab castle, the baroque churches, and the ceramic workshops create a compact historic center of considerable charm, the town less visited than the more famous destinations of the Agrigento province but offering a more authentic encounter with the daily life of a working Sicilian coastal community.

  2. 2

    Thermal Baths

Use the Sciacca thermal baths where the natural sulfurous hot springs emerging from the volcanic geology of the Sicilian coast have been used therapeutically since antiquity, the modern spa facilities offering the full range of thermal treatments in the most accessible natural wellness destination in the Agrigento province.

  3. 3

    Ceramic Tradition

Shop for the Sciacca ceramics where the distinctive blue and green color palette and the marine motifs of the fish, the sea waves, and the coral distinguish the Sciacca ceramic tradition from the more famous Caltagirone work, the ceramic shops in the historic center selling the hand-painted tiles, the decorative plates, and the functional tableware of the local craft.

  4. 4

    Fishing Harbor

Walk the Sciacca fishing harbor where one of the largest fishing fleets in Sicily operates, the boats returning in the afternoon with the day catch of Mediterranean fish and shellfish that supplies the local restaurants and the wholesale markets serving the Agrigento province, the harbor the most visually active and authentic part of the working coastal town.

  5. 5

    Carnival di Sciacca

Attend the Carnival di Sciacca in February when the parade of elaborate allegorical floats, the costume competitions, and the burning of the carnival king puppet at the end of festivities create one of the most traditional and least touristy carnival celebrations in Sicily, the four-day festival the high point of the local cultural calendar.

  6. 6

    Cave di Cusa

Visit the Cave di Cusa near Campobello di Mazara where the ancient quarry that supplied the stone for the Greek temples of Selinunte was suddenly abandoned in 409 BC when the Carthaginians attacked, the half-finished column drums and the quarrying tools left exactly as they were 2500 years ago creating the most poignant and unexpected archaeological site in the Agrigento province.
