Balmaceda & Serrano Glacier Day Walk

After a boat journey through the fjord, walk through native forest to view the hanging Balmaceda glacier and the vast Serrano glacier face.

  1. 1

    Puerto Natales Pier Departure

Boats depart daily from the municipal pier into the Última Esperanza Sound, navigating through mirror-calm fjord waters northward.

  2. 2

    Fjord Wildlife Viewing

Along the fjord passage, look for black-necked swans, steamer ducks, and the occasional Commerson's dolphin riding the boat wake.

  3. 3

    Balmaceda Glacier Viewpoint

The boat anchors near the hanging Balmaceda glacier, which spills dramatically from the mountains of Bernardo O'Higgins National Park.

  4. 4

    Serrano River Trail

A forest trail follows the Serrano River through ancient lenga beech woodland to reach the terminal face of the Serrano glacier.

  5. 5

    Serrano Glacier Face

Stand before the vast turquoise-and-white face of Serrano glacier — a towering wall of ancient ice calving into the dark glacial lake below.

  6. 6

    Asado Lunch Stop

Some tour operators offer a traditional Patagonian asado lamb barbecue at a riverside camp before the return boat journey south.
