Gili T Snorkel Start Point
The snorkel circuit boats depart from Gili Trawangan's main beach with guides who know the best sites around each island — the circuit typically visits four to five snorkel sites in the course of a half-day, spending time at each long enough to observe the turtle feeding areas, the coral gardens, and the fish aggregations that make the Gili Islands one of the most accessible marine environments in Asia.

Gili T Turtle Heaven
Turtle Heaven off the northwest coast of Gili Trawangan is the most reliable turtle snorkel site in the Gili group — the shallow reef flat where sea grass grows provides constant feeding activity for the resident green turtle population, and snorkellers who arrive in the early morning before boat traffic disturbs the turtles can often share the water with three or four turtles simultaneously feeding undisturbed.

Gili Meno Channel Crossing
The channel between Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno is one of the more interesting snorkel sites in the circuit — the current that flows through the channel brings open-ocean species including Napoleon wrasse and the occasional reef shark, and the mid-water experience of snorkelling in moving current over deeper water is different from the shallow reef snorkelling available from the beaches.

Gili Meno North Reef
The north reef of Gili Meno has the most intact coral of the three islands — the relative absence of boat traffic and anchor damage has allowed the coral garden here to develop beyond the degraded areas visible on Gili T's more visited sites, with the table corals, brain corals, and staghorn formations creating the underwater landscape that the Gili Islands were famous for before mass dive tourism degraded the most accessible reefs.

Gili Air East Reef
The east reef of Gili Air has a different species composition from the west-facing reefs of the other islands — the Lombok coast orientation brings different current patterns and the reef here has a higher density of reef fish including schools of fusiliers, angelfish, and the moray eels that hide in the coral crevices throughout the Gili reef system.

Returning to Gili Trawangan after the island circuit, the contrast between the underwater world just visited and the beach bar economy waiting on shore is among the most vivid environmental contrasts in Indonesian tourism — the extraordinary richness of the marine ecosystem below the surface and the commercial intensity of the tourist resort above it share the same small square kilometre of island and reef in a relationship that is simultaneously symbiotic and destructive.
