Gili Air Village & Local Life Walk

Walk Gili Air — the most locally-inhabited of the three Gili Islands, where a genuine Sasak Muslim community has lived for generations alongside the tourist accommodation, creating a more authentic island character than the party-focused Gili T or the honeymoon isolation of Gili Meno.

  1. 1

    Gili Air Village Centre

Gili Air's village centre has the highest concentration of local Sasak Muslim inhabitants of the three Gili Islands — the mosque, the local school, the community market, and the houses of the original fishing families who have lived here for generations create a genuine village character that exists in productive coexistence with the tourist guesthouses and restaurants that share the island.

  2. 2

    Gili Air East Beach

The east-facing beach of Gili Air faces the Lombok coast and has a more sheltered character than the west beach — the view of Lombok's Rinjani volcano rising behind the coastal plain, the fishing boats of the local community drawn up on the beach alongside tourist kayaks, and the absence of the sunset beach bar culture creates a quieter beach experience than the western shore.

  3. 3

    Gili Air Coral Reef Walk

The reef that wraps around the northeast of Gili Air is one of the healthiest in the Gili group — the combination of tidal current and relative distance from the diving concentration of Gili Trawangan has allowed the coral to recover from bleaching events, and the diversity of fish visible from the surface makes the northeast corner one of the best snorkelling circuits without a boat in the Gilis.

  4. 4

    Gili Air Morning Market

Gili Air's morning market operates at dawn — the women from the local community selling fresh fish from the previous night's catch, vegetables brought from Lombok, and cooked food for the local Muslim breakfast provide an authentic village market experience that has no parallel on the more thoroughly touristified Gili Trawangan.

  5. 5

    Gili Air Yoga Retreats

Gili Air has developed a significant yoga retreat presence that coexists with the local Muslim community — the yoga studios, meditation centres, and health food cafes that serve the wellness tourism market operate respectfully within the village context, reflecting the broader Lombok wellness tourism identity that distinguishes the island group from the more hedonistic Gili Trawangan culture.

  6. 6

    Gili Air Circumference Walk

Gili Air can be walked around its entire circumference in approximately 1.5 hours — the flat path around the island perimeter passes through beach club zones, village areas, dive school frontages, quiet coral beaches, and mangrove sections in a complete circuit that provides the best overview of the island's character and the variation between its four coastal faces.
