Alsatian Wine Route Day Trip – Riquewihr & Colmar
The best day trip from Strasbourg follows the Route des Vins south to the walled medieval village of Riquewihr—the most visited village in Alsace, its 16th-century fortified walls and half-timbered houses miraculously undamaged by the World Wars. Continue to Colmar: the 'Little Venice' of Alsace with its own canal quarter and the Unterlinden Museum housing Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece.

Mont Sainte-Odile & Vosges Mountains
The Vosges mountains west of Strasbourg offer hiking, spa towns, and medieval castles within 30–45 minutes by car or train. Mont Sainte-Odile—Alsace's most important pilgrimage site—offers panoramic views from its convent perched at 763 metres. The mysterious 'Pagan Wall' encircling the summit for 10 km predates recorded history.

Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle
Perched on a rocky spur at 755 metres above the Rhine plain, this reconstructed 12th-century castle is Alsace's most visited monument. Kaiser Wilhelm II had it rebuilt 1901–1908 to showcase imperial German medieval imagery; the result is an unusually well-preserved medieval fortress with intact great hall, towers, and drawbridge mechanisms, with the Rhine plain stretching to the Black Forest below.

Germany – Freiburg & Black Forest by Train
Strasbourg's position on the Franco-German border makes Freiburg im Breisgau just 45 minutes away by TGV. Germany's sunniest city is a lively university town with a pink sandstone Münster cathedral similar to Strasbourg's, a famous Bächle water channel system, and a gateway to the Black Forest—including the Feldberg peak at 1,493 metres.
- 5
Baden-Baden & Alsatian Thermal Spas
The Belle Époque resort town of Baden-Baden lies 50 km north of Freiburg and is easily combined with a Strasbourg trip. The Caracalla and Friedrichsbad thermal baths are among Europe's finest; the Casino—described by Marlene Dietrich as 'the most beautiful casino in the world'—and the spa gardens make it an ideal overnight extension from Strasbourg.

Alsatian Villages Cycling Loop
The gentle terrain of the Alsatian Plain between the Vosges and the Rhine is ideal cycling country. The EuroVelo 5 passes through Strasbourg, and local loops connect the wine villages of Obernai, Barr, Dambach-la-Ville, and Sélestat—each with its own medieval walls, stork nests, and wine cooperative. Bikes can be hired in Strasbourg and carried on regional trains.
