Monaco Classics: Palace Rock, Casino & the F1 Circuit

Experience the world's second-smallest country at its most iconic—walk the medieval streets of the Rock to Prince Albert's palace and Grace Kelly's cathedral, marvel at Garnier's Belle Époque casino, visit the Cousteau oceanographic museum, and walk the legendary Formula 1 street circuit.

  1. 1

Le Rocher – The Old Town & Palace

Monaco's original settlement occupies a dramatic 60-metre limestone rock jutting into the Mediterranean. The Palais Princier—home to the Grimaldi dynasty since 1297—dominates the plateau; the Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place at 11:55 am daily. The medieval old town (Monaco-Ville) clusters around the palace with narrow streets, craft shops, and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée where Grace Kelly is buried.

  2. 2

    Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée & Grace Kelly's Tomb

The neo-Romanesque cathedral built in 1875 from local white stone is the spiritual heart of the principality. Princess Grace (Grace Kelly) and Prince Rainier III are both buried in the cathedral's crypt. The cathedral hosts the renowned Les Chorégies d'Orange choral performances and serves as the principal church of the Grimaldi family.

  3. 3

    Casino de Monte-Carlo

Charles Garnier's 1863 Belle Époque casino—architect of the Paris Opera—is the most recognisable building in Monaco and one of the most beautiful gambling establishments in the world. The casino's ornate atrium is open for free visits; gaming rooms require a modest entry fee. The surrounding Place du Casino gardens with the Hôtel de Paris and Café de Paris complete the most glamorous square on the Riviera.

  4. 4

    Musée Océanographique de Monaco

Founded by Prince Albert I in 1910 and directed by Jacques Cousteau for 32 years, this cliffside museum is one of the world's great oceanographic institutions. The aquarium houses a 6-metre shark tank and living coral reef displays; upper floors contain historic diving equipment, whale skeletons, and the research vessels of Cousteau's expeditions. The clifftop terrace offers stunning sea views.

  5. 5

    Formula 1 Grand Prix Circuit

The Monaco Grand Prix, held each May since 1929, is the most prestigious race in motorsport—a narrow 3.34 km street circuit threading through the principality's tunnels, hairpins, and harbourside roads. Walking the circuit outside race week is free: key corners include the Sainte-Dévote chicane, Casino Square, the tunnel, and the famous Rascasse hairpin above the port.

  6. 6

    Port Hercule & Yacht Harbour

Monaco's natural deep-water harbour is home to some of the world's largest superyachts year-round. The port fills to maximum capacity during the Grand Prix and the Monaco Yacht Show each September—when vessels worth hundreds of millions of euros moor stern-to along the quays. The portside brasseries are Monaco's most affordable dining option and offer unbeatable people-watching.
