Monaco Day Trips: Eze, Menton, Italy & the Coastal Path

Use Monaco as a Riviera hub for exceptional day trips—walk the medieval streets of Eze village, taste Menton lemons, cross to Italy's Ventimiglia market, hike the dramatic sea-level coastal path, and visit Le Corbusier's tiny cabin where the modernist architect spent his final summers.

  1. 1

Eze Village & Grande Corniche from Monaco

The medieval hilltop village of Eze sits 429 metres above the sea just 8 km west of Monaco. The Grande Corniche—Napoleon's military road—connects the two with jaw-dropping coastal panoramas. Eze's Jardin Exotique cactus garden crowns the ruined castle with 360° views; the village houses the Fragonard perfume laboratory and dozens of artisan studios.

  2. 2

Menton – Lemon Capital on the Italian Border

Just 10 km east of Monaco (and 2 km from Italy), Menton is the warmest town in France—its sheltered bay nurtures lemon groves visible on terraced hillsides above the old town. The Marché du Monde Couvert offers excellent produce; Jean Cocteau's murals in the Salle des Mariages at the town hall are extraordinary. The annual Fête du Citron each February transforms the town with citrus sculpture.

  3. 3

Ventimiglia & the Italian Border Market

Cross into Italy just 12 km east of Monaco to Ventimiglia—a small Ligurian town with a famous Friday outdoor market drawing shoppers from across the Riviera for Italian produce, leather goods, and cookware at prices considerably lower than the French side. The medieval Ventimiglia alta (upper town) has an intact Romanesque cathedral and castle above the beach resort below.

  4. 4

Cap d'Ail & Coastal Walking Path

The coastal path (sentier du littoral) from Monaco's Fontvieille district westward to Cap d'Ail follows the rocky shoreline below the cliffs at sea level—one of the most dramatic coastal walks on the Côte d'Azur. The path passes tiny calanques and secluded beaches accessible only on foot; the Cap d'Ail village above has a Belle Époque heritage and excellent fish restaurants.

  5. 5

    Roquebrune-Cap-Martin & Corbusier's Cabanon

The medieval village of Roquebrune perches above Cap Martin between Monaco and Menton—its 10th-century castle is the oldest feudal castle in France with intact towers and dungeon. On the Cap Martin peninsula below, Le Corbusier built his tiny Cabanon holiday cabin in 1952 (visited by guided tour only); he died here in 1965, swimming in the sea at 77.

  6. 6

    Nice as Monaco's Practical Base

Monaco has very limited accommodation and eye-watering hotel prices—staying in Nice (20 min by train) makes far more financial sense for most visitors. The Monaco train station (funicular from Fontvieille) connects to Nice every 20 minutes on the coastal line; the journey hugs the cliff-face with sea views and passes through the Cap d'Ail tunnel directly under the principality.
