Pamir Dark Sky Astronomy Experience

Experience some of the world's most spectacular stargazing in the high Pamir above Khorog, where altitude, dry air, and complete absence of light pollution create conditions for observing the night sky that rival any site on Earth.

  1. 1

    Khorog Evening Departure

Leave Khorog after sunset, driving up the mountain roads as darkness falls and the first stars appear with unusual clarity in an atmosphere thin enough to reveal celestial objects invisible from lower altitudes.

  2. 2

    High Pasture Observation Point

Reach the high pasture above 3,000 meters where the horizon is unobstructed in all directions, the Milky Way arc visible as a luminous band across the sky from one mountain horizon to the other in conditions of total darkness.

  3. 3

    Telescope Setup

Set up telescopes in the cold mountain air, using guides who know which celestial targets are currently visible in Pamir skies and can explain the astronomical traditions of the Pamiri people who navigated by stars for millennia.

  4. 4

    Planet and Constellation Observation

Observe planets, nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies with exceptional clarity, the high altitude removing much of the atmospheric absorption that limits observation quality at lower elevations even in remote locations.

  5. 5

    Milky Way Photography

Photograph the Milky Way rising over the dark silhouette of Pamir peaks, the combination of extraordinary sky transparency and dramatic mountain foreground creating images rarely possible anywhere else on Earth.

  6. 6

    Dawn Return

Stay through the brief darkness of the short summer night to watch dawn approach, the mountains emerging from darkness as pale light spreads across the eastern peaks in an alpine sunrise that ends a night of remarkable celestial observation.
