A demanding full-day hike through rainforest and over steep ridges to a viewing platform directly opposite the Franz Josef Glacier icefall — the most dramatic close-up view.

Roberts Point Trailhead
The trail begins near the village and immediately climbs steeply through dense rainforest — this is the most challenging of Franz Josef's day walks.

Steel Ladders Section
Steep steel ladders and chains assist passage over the most exposed rocky sections — the trail was cut by mountaineers who needed access to the glacier's upper reaches.

Bush Saddle
The saddle gives first views of the glacier across the valley — the angle reveals the true steepness of the ice as it cascades over the bluffs above.

Icefall Viewpoint Ridge
The ridge overlooks the Franz Josef icefall directly — massive seracs and crevasses tower above, the glacier grinding visibly forward as ice breaks and falls.

Roberts Point Platform
The final viewing platform is eye-level with the middle section of the glacier — the sound of cracking ice and falling seracs is audible on warm afternoons.

Valley Return Descent
The steep descent returns through the same stunning forest, now lit from a different angle — kea parrots are common on the upper slopes, calling their haunting cries.
