Alex Knob Panorama Hike

A challenging full-day climb through rainforest to the alpine viewpoint of Alex Knob, rewarding hikers with unparalleled views of Franz Josef Glacier and the Tasman Sea.

  1. 1

    Alex Knob Trailhead

The trail begins just south of the village, climbing immediately into dense temperate rainforest of rimu, kahikatea, and southern rātā trees.

  2. 2

    Rainforest Canopy Zone

The middle section passes through magnificent rainforest draped in moss and lichen — one of the wettest places in New Zealand receives over 5,000 mm of rain annually.

  3. 3

    Subalpine Scrub Zone

Above the treeline, the vegetation shifts to leatherwood, dracophyllum, and alpine tussock — the glacier comes into view through gaps in the low scrub.

  4. 4

    Alex Knob Summit (1303m)

The summit offers the finest view of Franz Josef Glacier — the entire 12-km glacier is visible from neve to terminal face, descending dramatically from the Main Divide.

  5. 5

    Southern Alps Panorama

On clear days the panorama stretches from Aoraki Mount Cook to the north to the Fox Glacier peaks to the south — a glacier-studded Alpine spectacle.

  6. 6

    Tasman Sea Viewpoint

Looking west, the Tasman Sea is visible just 12 km away — the extraordinary juxtaposition of ocean, rainforest, and glacier is unique to New Zealand's West Coast.
