Canoeing the Vltava – Day Trips & Multi-Day Routes
The Vltava river from its source in Šumava to Prague is one of Central Europe's classic canoe routes—clear water, gentle current, beautiful riverside scenery. The South Bohemian section (Rožmberk nad Vltavou to Český Krumlov to Zlatá Koruna to České Budějovice) is the most beautiful, passing castle ruins, riverside villages, and forested gorges. Canoe hire companies in Český Krumlov (Maleček, Půjčovna lodí) rent equipment from €15/day per canoe; shuttle service back to the start is included.

Rock Climbing & Via Ferrata in the Vltava Valley
The limestone cliffs of the Vltava valley near Český Krumlov—particularly around Boletice and Holubov—offer sport climbing routes of all grades in a dramatic river-canyon setting. The Holubov via ferrata (15 km north of Český Krumlov) is a full-day aided rock climbing route with fixed ladders, bridges, and cables along the valley wall above the river. The route is technical enough for experienced climbers and dramatic enough to justify the drive from Prague.

Cycling the South Bohemian Greenways
The South Bohemian Greenways cycling network connects Český Krumlov to Třeboň, České Budějovice, and the Šumava foothills on dedicated cycling paths. The Vltava cycle route (EuroVelo 7, running from Norway to Malta) passes through Český Krumlov on its way north to Prague. The terrain is gently hilly; most routes are accessible to casual cyclists. E-bike rental is available in Český Krumlov for the steeper Šumava approaches.

Horseback Riding in South Bohemia
South Bohemia's meadow landscape—rolling hills, forest tracks, and river valleys—is ideal horse country. Several stables around Český Krumlov (Jezdecký klub Chvalšiny, Ranč Chvalšiny) offer trail rides through the Šumava foothills for beginners and experienced riders. Multi-day riding routes through the South Bohemian countryside, staying at farm guesthouses, are organised by the local equestrian association. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons—spring wildflowers, summer heat, autumn mist.

Rafting & Water Sports on the Vltava
The Vltava above Český Krumlov runs through several rapids suitable for white-water rafting (Grade II–III in spring meltwater conditions). Inflatable raft hire is available in Vyšší Brod (30 km upstream) for the 30 km run downstream to Český Krumlov—a full-day trip passing through the wildest section of the river canyon. In summer low water the same stretch is perfect for SUP (stand-up paddleboard). Fishing (trout, grayling) requires a permit but is excellent in the Vltava tributaries.

Hiking the Šumava Ridge Trails
The Šumava plateau ridge—30 km from Český Krumlov—offers high-altitude hiking across ancient peat bogs and spruce forests at 1,000–1,300 metres. The Boubín primeval forest (50 km northwest of Český Krumlov) is one of the last remnants of original Central European mixed mountain forest, protected since 1858. The surrounding Šumava network of marked trails ranges from 3-hour valley walks to the 3-day Šumava spine route. Wildlife—deer, foxes, and increasingly wolves and lynx—is frequently spotted at dawn.
