Redwoods Mountain Biking: Trails, Seasons and the Forest Experience
The Whakarewarewa Forest mountain bike trail network is considered one of the top ten in the world, with over 130 km of trails through cathedral redwoods. This route covers trail grades, seasonal conditions and the surrounding forest experience.
- 1
Grade 2 Blue Trails
Beginner and intermediate riders enjoy smooth flowing trails through the redwoods with gentle climbs and descents. The Tahi and Rua trails are the most popular introduction to the forest trail network.
- 2
Grade 4 and 5 Black Trails
Expert riders have access to technical single track with drops, roots and challenging terrain. The Diablo and Split Enz trails are among the most demanding and rewarding in the network.
- 3
Rental and Shuttle
Multiple bike rental shops in Rotorua offer high-quality trail bikes and e-bikes. Shuttles to the top of the trail network save climbing time and maximize descending. Guided rides are available for visitors unfamiliar with the forest.
- 4
Seasonal Riding
Rotorua's mild, wet climate means the trails are rideable year-round but autumn and spring offer the best conditions. Summer heat can be intense and winter rains make some trails muddy. The redwoods provide cover from light rain.
- 5
Rotorua Bike Festival
The annual Crankworx Rotorua festival in March is one of the world's premier mountain bike events, attracting professional riders and thousands of spectators to the forest trails.
- 6
Post-Ride Spa
Finishing a forest ride with a soak in the Polynesian Spa's geothermal mineral pools is a Rotorua tradition. The combination of physical exertion and hot pool recovery is uniquely satisfying in this volcanic landscape.
