Ridge Ascent Start
The trail climbs the central ridge separating Cumberland Bay from the wild eastern coast — a strenuous ascent through endemic cloud forest.

At the saddle, the vegetation changes dramatically from moist western cloud forest to drier eastern shrubland, shaped by the rain shadow effect.

Eastern Cliff Panorama
The eastern cliffs drop vertiginously to the sea — a raw, wild coast where no village exists and where petrels nest in thousands in the cliff face.

The remote eastern bay with its black volcanic pebble beach is accessible only by this trail or by boat — a completely unspoiled Pacific wilderness.

Sea Bird Nesting Cliffs
Juan Fernández petrels, pink-footed shearwaters, and Stejneger's petrels nest in burrows on the eastern cliffs, filling the air with their calls at dusk.

Return Ridge Sunset
The walk back over the ridge at sunset offers views of both coasts simultaneously — the sheltered bay glowing gold to the west, the wild sea darkening to the east.
