Bukit Peninsula Sunset Cliff Walk

Drive the Bukit Peninsula's western coast at sunset — from the famous cliff temples of Uluwatu to the surf bars of Balangan, the limestone headlands dropping into the Indian Ocean provide the most dramatic sunset backdrops in all of Bali.

  1. 1

    Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is Bali's most dramatically situated sea temple — perched 70 metres above the Indian Ocean on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, the temple's sunset silhouette with the crashing surf below is the defining Bali image for millions of visitors.

  2. 2

    Uluwatu Kecak Fire Dance

The Kecak fire dance performed at Uluwatu temple at sunset uses the cliff backdrop and the ocean horizon as its stage — 50 male dancers chanting 'cak' in interlocking rhythms enact the Ramayana epic as the sun drops into the Indian Ocean behind them.

  3. 3

    Balangan Beach

Balangan Beach below the Bukit cliffs has a long left-hand surf break and a row of warung cafes on the clifftop — the combination of consistent surf, budget accommodation, and spectacular ocean views has made this one of Bali's most atmospheric surf spots.

  4. 4

    Dreamland Beach Sunset

Dreamland (New Kuta) Beach on the Bukit Peninsula has one of the most dramatic cliff-backed beaches in Bali — the white sand beach in the cove below the limestone cliffs is best at sunset when the cliff faces glow orange in the evening light.

  5. 5

    Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang is the beach famous from the film Eat Pray Love — the small, steep-sided cove accessible through a cliff cave has a powerful beach break that produces some of the most photogenic surf in Bali, with the limestone walls creating a natural amphitheatre.

  6. 6

    Suluban Blue Point Bar

The bars and cafes above Suluban Beach (Blue Point) at Uluwatu look directly west over the Indian Ocean — the elevated cliff-top position means every sunset is an unobstructed horizon event, and the spot has been Bali's most celebrated sunset-watching location for decades.
