Kaikōura Valley Road
The valley behind Kaikōura cuts into the Seaward Kaikōura Range through pastoral farmland — the peaks ahead rise from sea level to 2,600 metres in under 10 kilometres, an almost vertical relief.

Kowhai Track Entry
The Kowhai Track climbs into the range foothills through native bush and tussock grassland — in spring, the kowhai trees along the stream edge are covered in golden flowers.

Mountain Stream Crossing
A crystal-clear mountain stream tumbles down from permanent snowfields — the water is cold enough to taste the mountains, fed by glacial melt from the high ridgelines above.

Limestone Bluff Viewpoint
A limestone bluff above the track gives a sudden view of the complete coastal panorama — Kaikōura township, the peninsula, and the open ocean spread out below the peaks.

Alpine Tussock Zone
The track enters alpine tussock grassland where kea (mountain parrots) may be heard calling — these intelligent birds are among New Zealand's most charismatic wildlife.
