Hunza Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek

Trek to the base camp of Rakaposhi (7,788m) — the great snow mountain that dominates the Hunza Valley in a sweep from valley floor to summit uninterrupted by any other significant ridge, the trek climbing through forest and alpine meadow to the glacier camp where the mountain fills the entire sky.

  1. 1

    Minapin Village Start

Begin the trek at Minapin village — the traditional starting point for the Rakaposhi base camp approach, the village at the valley floor where jeep tracks end and the mountain trail begins, the Minapin glacier visible from the village as a white tongue descending from the mountain above.

  2. 2

    Forest Zone Trail

Climb through the birch and juniper forest zone above Minapin — the trail ascending steeply through the last trees on the mountain, the Hunza Valley expanding below as altitude is gained, the forest thinning as the alpine zone begins and the rocky moraines of the glacier approach appear ahead.

  3. 3

    Rakaposhi Viewpoint Meadow

Reach the alpine meadow viewpoint with the first full view of Rakaposhi's south face — the mountain revealing itself in stages as the trail climbs, the final revelation of the enormous summit pyramid appearing above the moraine ridge and dominating the entire visual field from this meadow.

  4. 4

    Minapin Glacier Snout

Cross the Minapin Glacier snout — the rocky, debris-covered lower end of the glacier where the ice is buried under rock fall, the crossing requiring careful route-finding over unstable moraine with the cleaner ice of the glacier visible higher up the valley.

  5. 5

    Base Camp Site

The Rakaposhi base camp at approximately 3,800 meters — the traditional camping ground below the technical sections of the mountain, the camp used by mountaineering expeditions attempting the summit and by trekkers who come for the extraordinary close-range views of the glacier and the summit ridgeline above.

  6. 6

    Glacier Evening Light

Evening light on the Rakaposhi glacier — the long shadows crossing the glacier surface as the sun sets behind the western ridge, the ice turning blue in the shadow while the summit remains in warm light, the silence of the high camp broken only by occasional ice falls from the seracs above.
