Ana Kakenga & Lava Tube Coastal Walk

Crawl through a lava tube to emerge at a clifftop cave with two natural windows framing the vast Pacific Ocean — one of the island's great hidden gems.

  1. 1

    Ana Kakenga Entrance

The inconspicuous entrance to the Two Windows Cave is a small hole in the coastal lava field north of Hanga Roa — easy to miss without local knowledge.

  2. 2

    Lava Tube Crawl

A short, narrow lava tube requires crawling for several metres before opening into a larger cavern that extends toward the cliff edge.

  3. 3

    Two Windows Cave

Two natural windows in the cliff face frame perfect oval views of the Pacific Ocean and rocky coastline — a sacred hiding place used in tribal warfare.

  4. 4

    Coastal Lava Shelf Trail

The trail follows the jagged lava shelf along the coast past blowholes, sea arches, and spray-drenched rock platforms alive with ghost crabs.

  5. 5

    Ana Te Pahu Garden Cave

A series of interconnected lava tubes containing a subterranean garden, where Rapa Nui people grew sweet potatoes and taro in the cool underground microclimate.

  6. 6

    Coastal Sunset Point

Return to the coast at dusk; the lava shelf here faces directly west, offering an unobstructed view of the sun dropping into the Pacific horizon.
