Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust
The rarest penguin on earth comes ashore at several locations on the Otago Peninsula in the late afternoon. Hides managed by the Penguin Place operator allow close, undisturbed views without disturbing the birds.

New Zealand Sea Lions
New Zealand sea lions, among the world's rarest marine mammals, breed on the Otago Peninsula beaches. Bulls can weigh 400 kg and are best observed from a respectful distance with a guide.

Little Blue Penguins
The world's smallest penguin species (also called fairy penguins) nest in burrows throughout the peninsula and can be observed returning from the sea after dark at several managed observation sites.

Fur Seal Colonies
New Zealand fur seals occupy the rocky headlands at the tip of the peninsula. The Otago Peninsula Trust manages visitor access to minimize disturbance while allowing excellent close-range observation.

Birdwatching
The peninsula is outstanding for sea birds: shags, oystercatchers, gannets and various gulls nest on the rocky coast. The albatross colony at Taiaroa Head is the centerpiece but the diversity is extraordinary.
