Bukittinggi Surrounding Villages & Batusangkar Walk
Explore the traditional Minangkabau villages around Bukittinggi — the surrounding nagari (villages) and the royal capital of Batusangkar preserve the most complete examples of traditional Minangkabau architecture, royal culture, and adat practices in West Sumatra.
- 1
Batusangkar Royal Capital
Batusangkar, the historical royal capital of the Pagaruyung Kingdom (the royal house of the Minangkabau), is 40km east of Bukittinggi — the reconstructed Istano Basa Pagaruyung palace (the original burned in 2007 and has been rebuilt) with its elaborate three-tiered roof and carved wooden decorations represents the grandest expression of Minangkabau royal architecture. The royal palace visits accompanied by the historical context of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, which claimed sovereignty over all Minangkabau territory and served as the symbolic centre of Minangkabau cultural identity, provide the most comprehensive introduction to Minangkabau aristocratic culture.
- 2
Pagaruyung Palace Complex
The Istano Basa Pagaruyung palace complex contains multiple traditional buildings around the main palace — the bagonjong rice barns, the smaller houses for court officials, and the royal ceremonial items displayed in the main hall provide a physical representation of the Minangkabau royal court at the height of Pagaruyung Kingdom's influence in the 17th-18th centuries. The palace's position at the foot of Gunung Bungsu with its commanding views of the Tanah Datar plain, the agricultural heartland of Minangkabau civilisation, emphasises the symbolic relationship between the royal house and the productive highland landscape it governed.
- 3
Nagari Pariangan Old Village
Nagari Pariangan near Batusangkar is believed to be the original settlement of the Minangkabau people — the ancient village on the slopes of Gunung Marapi with its traditional rumah gadang (great houses), the old mosque, and the stone monuments associated with the legendary founding of Minangkabau civilisation has been called one of the most beautiful villages in the world. The compact village layout following the principles of adat settlement planning, surrounded by rice terraces and with the volcano rising above, represents a Minangkabau village as it appeared for centuries before the modernisation of the 20th century.
- 4
Bukittinggi Fort de Kock Area
The area around Fort de Kock includes the highland zoo and park that provide views of the Agam valley below — the park occupying the former military fortification ground has Sumatran wildlife including tapir and hornbills in the zoo section, while the fort's hilltop position provides panoramic views of the city, the Sianok Canyon, and on clear days the peaks of Gunung Marapi and Singgalang. The suspension bridge connecting the fort area to the Taman Panorama canyon rim park allows a circuit walk combining the historical military site with the canyon edge viewpoints.

Agam Regency Villages
The villages of Agam Regency surrounding Bukittinggi preserve the most intact traditional Minangkabau rural society in West Sumatra — the nagari villages with their communal land (ulayat) managed through the matrilineal clan system, their traditional leaders (penghulu) managing adat affairs alongside the elected village government, and their regular adat ceremonies from harvest celebrations to elaborate royal-style weddings represent a living traditional society that adapts modernity while maintaining the customs that define Minangkabau identity.

Maninjau Lake Highland Drive
Lake Maninjau, 36km west of Bukittinggi, is accessible via a dramatic road with 44 hairpin bends (called 'kelok 44') descending 600 metres from the highland plateau to the caldera lake surface — the lake occupying a smaller volcanic caldera than Toba has the tranquil character of a highland fishing community lake, with floating net cage fish farms, traditional lake villages, and the birthplace of Buya Hamka (the prominent 20th-century Islamic scholar and Indonesian literary figure) on its shore. The drive to Maninjau is itself one of the most scenic in West Sumatra.
