Brașov Practical Guide: Trains, Budget & Transylvania Circuit

Plan the perfect Transylvania visit from Brașov—fast trains from Bucharest in 2.5 hours, hiring a car to unlock the fortified church villages, keeping total costs under €150 for three days, choosing your season from ski winter to golden autumn, and designing the classic 5-day Transylvania circuit via Sighișoara, Peleș, and Sibiu.

  1. 1

Brașov Train Station & Getting Here

Brașov sits on the main Bucharest–Cluj rail corridor—fast trains (InterRegio) connect to Bucharest in 2.5 hours, Sinaia in 40 minutes, and Sighișoara in 2 hours. Intercity coaches (Flixbus, AutoGari) are faster and cheaper than trains for Bucharest (2 hours). The train station is 2 km from the old town; bus and taxi connections are quick. From Budapest, an overnight train takes 10 hours via Cluj.

  2. 2

Getting Around Brașov & Hire Cars

The old town is compact and entirely walkable. Local buses connect the station, Schei, and Poiana Brașov ski resort (bus 20 runs frequently). A hire car unlocks the full Transylvania circuit—Bran, Râșnov, Peleș, Sighișoara, Sibiu, and the fortified churches—in 3–4 days. Romanian roads in Transylvania are generally in good condition; mountain passes close in heavy winter snow.

  3. 3

    Budget Brașov – Romania's Best-Value City Break

Brașov offers exceptional value: a restaurant meal costs €5–10; a craft beer €2; a guesthouse double room €25–45; the Black Church entry €4; the Bran Castle €12. The cable car up Tampa costs €8 return. A three-day visit including day trips to Bran and Râșnov is achievable for €100–150 total including accommodation. Brașov is consistently rated one of Europe's best-value city break destinations.

    Where to Stay in Brașov

Staying within or immediately adjacent to the old town gives walking access to Piața Sfatului and the Black Church. The Schei district below the Schei Gate offers quieter guesthouses; the streets around Piața Unirii have apartment rentals. Poiana Brașov ski resort (12 km) has its own hotel strip better suited to ski visits. Booking ahead is essential in July–August and December–February ski season.

  5. 5

Best Seasons & Transylvania in Each Season

Brașov rewards visits in every season. Spring (May–June) brings wildflowers to the Carpathian meadows and mild hiking conditions. Summer (July–August) is peak season—warm, busy, festivals running. Autumn (September–October) offers golden foliage on Tampa and the surrounding hills, mushroom markets, and harvest festivals. Winter (December–February) brings snow, skiing at Poiana Brașov, and a beautiful Christmas market in Piața Sfatului.

    Transylvania Circuit – Planning a Multi-Day Tour

Brașov makes the ideal base for a 5–7 day Transylvania circuit: Day 1–2 Brașov old town; Day 3 Bran and Râșnov; Day 4 Sinaia and Peleș; Day 5 Sighișoara day trip; Day 6–7 westward to Sibiu (2 hrs) and Corvin Castle (3.5 hrs). The circuit can be done by train and bus but a hire car allows flexibility to stop at fortified villages and the Transfăgărășan Highway if open. Sibiu deserves its own two-night stay.
